How to Start an Aesthetic Clinic from Scratch – A Step-by-Step Guide
Starting your own aesthetic clinic can feel like a huge leap — and in many ways, it is. But it’s also one of the most empowering, rewarding, and liberating decisions you can make as a qualified practitioner. Whether you’re a nurse, pharmacist, doctor, or prescriber looking to leave the NHS, or you’re newly trained and full of ambition, you’re in the right place.
At The Academy of Safe Aesthetics, we work with students at all stages — from complete beginners to experienced injectors ready to build their brand. Here’s a clear, professional guide on how to set up your own clinic from scratch.
Start with Training That Sets the Standard
Before anything else, your foundation must be solid. Choose CPD-accredited training that gives you hands-on experience, not just theory. Our Foundation and Advanced Injectables courses cover everything from anatomy and consultation to safe injecting and complications management.
If you’re a non-prescriber, ensure your training also includes guidance on working with a prescriber. We offer prescriber networking support to help you stay compliant.
Insure Yourself – Protect Your Future
One of the most common mistakes new practitioners make is underestimating insurance. You’ll need professional indemnity and public liability insurance specific to aesthetics. Providers like Hamilton Fraser, Insync, or Enhance Insurance are well-recognised in the industry. You’ll typically need to submit your certificates, GMC/GPhC/NMC registration (if applicable), and treatment protocols.
Secure a Safe Clinical Environment
You can operate from home, rent a room in a salon or clinic, or even open your own premises. Each option comes with pros and cons, but the most important factor is that your environment is hygienic, compliant, private, and professional.
Make sure to carry out risk assessments, infection control procedures, and follow health & safety guidelines. If you offer advanced medical services like prescription skincare or weight loss treatments, you may eventually need to consider CQC registration.
Legal Setup: Don’t Skip the Paperwork
Register yourself as self-employed or form a limited company. You’ll also need:
- A business bank account
- HMRC registration
- Data protection registration (ICO)
- Terms and conditions
- Medical consent forms and aftercare documentation (we provide templates in our courses)
These are not just legal formalities — they protect you and build trust with your clients.
Stock Carefully — Start Small
Start with essentials. Buy only what you need for your initial appointments. We recommend waiting until you’ve booked your first few clients before investing in large quantities of stock. We also provide our students with trusted supplier contacts and discounts.
Start Marketing Like a Professional
A well-presented Instagram account and Google Business Profile can attract your first 20–30 clients organically. Start by sharing:
- Before and afters
- Educational posts about treatments
- Your journey as a practitioner
- Behind-the-scenes content
- Client testimonials (with consent)
And remember, don’t aim to look like everyone else — aim to look like a safe, ethical, and relatable expert.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Starting a clinic is a big step, but with the right mentorship, it becomes manageable. At The Academy of Safe Aesthetics, we offer refresher days, shadowing, and 1:1 business mentorship tailored to new clinic owners.
You don’t need to be perfect to start — you just need to start safely. Your clients are out there waiting for someone like you to make them feel confident again.
